The three main stages of Invisalign treatment are:
1. Planning stage:
This initial phase involves a comprehensive consultation with your Invisalign-certified dentist. During this visit, your dentist will assess your oral health, discuss your smile goals, and determine if Invisalign is the right option for you.
They’ll take detailed 3D scans of your teeth using advanced imaging technology, eliminating the need for uncomfortable traditional impressions. These scans, along with photographs and X-rays, are used to create a customised digital treatment plan.
This plan maps out the precise movements of your teeth throughout the entire treatment process, allowing you to visualise your future smile before treatment even begins.
2. Active stage:
This is the core of your Invisalign treatment. Based on your custom treatment plan, a series of clear, removable aligners are created specifically for you.
You’ll wear each set of aligners for about 1-2 weeks, typically for 20-22 hours per day, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you progress through the series, each aligner will gradually shift your teeth into their desired positions.
You’ll have regular check-ups with your dentist every 6-8 weeks to monitor your progress and receive your next set of aligners. The length of this stage varies depending on your individual case, but it typically lasts between 6 to 18 months.
3. Retention stage:
After your teeth have moved into their new, aligned positions, it’s crucial to maintain these results.
This final stage involves wearing retainers to prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original positions. Initially, you may need to wear your retainers full-time, except when eating or cleaning your teeth.
Over time, your dentist may reduce this to nighttime wear only. The retention stage is ongoing, as it’s important to wear your retainers as directed to preserve your new smile.
Your dentist will also schedule periodic follow-up appointments to ensure your teeth remain in their new positions and your smile stays beautiful.
